Yoga With Jo
What Is Hatha Yoga?
Hatha Yoga is a branch of yoga that emphasises physical postures (asanas), breath control (pranayama), and meditation to cultivate balance, strength, flexibility, and mental focus. Hatha yoga is a complete spiritual pathway, integrating all aspects of ourselves to find balance and growth. Originating in ancient India, the term “Hatha” translates to “force” or “willful” in Sanskrit, symbolizing the yoga of activity and effort. Hatha Yoga aims to prepare the body and mind for deeper spiritual practices by harmonizing the dual energies of “Ha” (sun) and “Tha” (moon), representing vitality and calmness.
Unlike faster-paced yoga styles like Vinyasa, Hatha Yoga typically involves slower, more deliberate movements with a focus on holding poses for longer periods to deepen awareness and alignment.
Our new yoga studio at 8 The Crescent, Plymouth, PL1 3AB
Each session incorporates breathing exercises (pranayama), poses (asana), and relaxation or meditation to connect the practitioner with both the physical body and inner consciousness. Through regular practice, Hatha Yoga promotes physical well-being by enhancing muscle tone, flexibility, and stamina, while also reducing stress and promoting mental clarity.
Hatha serves as a foundational style from which many other yoga practices, such as Ashtanga, Iyengar, and Vinyasa, have evolved. It is often recommended for beginners due to its methodical approach, making it accessible to individuals of all fitness levels and providing a well-rounded introduction to yoga.
Group and one-to-one yoga classes available.
Classes…
Group classes are for mixed abilities, including complete beginners. No previous experience of yoga, or special degree of physical ability, required. All postures can be modified as needed.
Each class includes a combination of asana (yoga pose) practice, pranayama (breath work), relaxation/meditation, and yoga spiritual teachings/philosophy.
I also offer a Very Gentle Yoga Class for students with limited flexibility or strength, or those looking for light mindful movement and mind/body connection.
Within each series of classes, which run over a number of weeks, we wexplore different aspects of yoga spiritual teachings and philosophy. Each class has a theme, or ‘sankalpa’, as a focus to help deepen our practice and develop inner awareness and growth.
