Hypnotherapy can provide support to expectant mothers and their birth partners throughout pregnancy. There are a number of helpful techniques you can learn to ensure that during your pregnancy and birth you are as calm, confident and in control as possible.
Hypnotherapy can help you to feel more confident about giving birth, and to overcome any nervousness you may have. It can also help you deal with any unhelpful beliefs or fears, including de-traumatising previous experiences (or phobias) if necessary. Your sleep will improve and this will also mean you have higher energy levels.
Hypnotherapy can help you to engage more fully with the process of giving birth, so that you can remain focused and in control, and you feel more able to trust that your body knows how to give birth. It can help to lower blood pressure, and allow you to deal more effectively with pain. You will learn self-hypnosis techniques to use throughout the birth. Pain creates resistance in the uterine muscles, so the more relaxed and calm you are, the more strongly these muscles will contract.
Your birthing partner can also engage with hypnotherapy and be prepared and relaxed for the birth. They can join you during the sessions and learn the techniques you will use, as well as how to use trance to help keep you calm and relaxed during the birth. Your partner will be able to take an active and supportive role, and provide strength and assistance throughout the birth.
Hypnotherapy also has advantages for the baby. If the birth is relatively calm, the baby will tend to stay calm, quiet and alert after the birth. If the mother is calm, the baby will benefit from higher levels of oxygenation and reduced levels of stress hormones. The more relaxed the mother is, the more beneficial it is to the baby. And a calm birth greatly assists with the bonding that takes place afterwards.
